JTBC has unveiled the first teaser for its upcoming drama « The Apartment Job« supported by Ji Sung in a role as unexpected as it is offbeat.
Scheduled for release on July 11, the series will follow a former gang leader who decides to run for the residents' council of an apartment complex in order to get his hands on a large sum of hidden money.
A former gangster in search of treasure
In «The Apartment Job», Ji Sung plays Park Hae-kang, former boss of the Oasis gang, renowned for its impressive debt collection rate of 100 %. The teaser opens with his past as a fearsome debt collector, with tough fights and unconventional methods of getting his money back.
But the mood quickly changes when a character nicknamed «Lizard» reveals that a huge sum of money is lying dormant in the residential complex.
The mysterious maintenance fund at the heart of the plot
Park Hae-kang and his sidekicks discover the existence of the famous reserve fund for condominium work, known in Korea as «Jangchunggeum». This fund, built up over the years by residents to finance future renovations, could amount to as much as 10 billion won (around 6.6 million euros), according to the teaser.
Convinced that there was an opportunity to be seized, Hae-kang decided to run for president of the residents' council.
Ji Sung reveals a totally different face
One of the highlights of the teaser is Ji Sung's radical transformation. Accustomed to dramatic, intense roles, the actor appears here as an eccentric candidate, multiplying campaign dances, forced smiles and clumsy attempts to seduce the building's inhabitants.
This duality between ruthless former gangster and neighborhood candidate lends a comic dimension that immediately sets the series apart.
A mix of comedy, corruption and neighborhood life
Beyond its original plot, «The Apartment Job» also promises to explore the power struggles, financial malfeasance and petty conflicts of everyday life within a condominium. The teaser also hints at the turbulent relationship between Park Hae-kang and Kang Ha-ri (Ha Yoon-kyung), who should play an important role in his adventure.
In the last scene, Hae-kang says to his companions: «In 3 months, we'll get the maintenance fund and be on our way!» A statement that perfectly sums up the drama's wacky, humorous tone.
«The Apartment Job» will be broadcast from July 11 on JTBC and Netflix. Some of the teaser excerpts give us the impression that Vincenzo's atmosphere is back, don't you think?
