As the broadcast of “We Are All Trying Here”Go Youn-jung opened up about her role and the depth of the drama, which blends introspection and dark humor.

This new JTBC project follows Hwang Dong-man, a man surrounded by friends who all seem successful, but who himself feels out of step. Overcome by anxiety and jealousy, he embarks on a personal quest to regain a sense of balance.

A character marked by an inner struggle

Go Youn-jung plays Byun Eun-ah, a strict-tempered producer nicknamed “Axis PD” for her trenchant criticism.

But behind this façade lies a woman in the grip of deep questioning. The actress describes her as “someone who imposes even stricter standards on herself, constantly asking herself, ‘Am I really a person of value?’”

She also explains: “When she's overwhelmed by stress or anxiety, she doesn't cry, but bleeds from the nose. Rather than expressing her emotions, she represses them, pursuing a silent inner battle.”

To embody this complexity, Go Youn-jung focused on subtle details: “I paid particular attention to the changes in the eyes, the rhythm of the speech and the nuances in the voice. As this is a character with a lot of emptiness, I tried to fill that space.”

A sincere and inspiring relationship

The actress also spoke of her collaboration with Koo Kyo-hwan, who plays Hwang Dong-man: “I often felt like I was really looking at Hwang Dong-man. He exudes a luminous energy, but also hides constant efforts and inner struggles.”

She adds: “His acting has a clear structure despite its freedom. The character I imagined became much richer and more complex thanks to him, and that inspired me a lot.”

The relationship between their characters is distinguished by its discretion, but also by its depth. Go Youn-jung explains that they are “two people who are not very visible to the world, but who instinctively recognize each other's value and comfort each other.”

She also confides, “The words Byun Eun-ah speaks to Hwang Dong-man are actually the words she'd like to say to herself.” A dynamic that reinforces the authenticity of their bond.

Finally, the actress shares the message she wishes to convey: “I hope viewers will see the feeling of worthlessness not as something to be eliminated, but as a process to be understood and accepted.” She adds, “I hope it will allow everyone to feel a form of liberation by accepting themselves.”

“We Are All Trying Here” will air from April 18 on jTBC and Netflix.
