SBS has unveiled new images from its upcoming Friday-Saturday drama « Phantom Lawyer« highlighting the radical transformation of Yoo Yeon-seok. With its mix of comedy, emotion and the supernatural, the series promises an unexpected variation on courtroom drama.
Phantom Lawyer follows an ordinary lawyer whose life is turned upside down by a seemingly innocuous decision.
A lawyer too human to ignore the invisible
Yoo Yeon-seok plays Shin Yi-rang, a mild-mannered and deeply empathetic lawyer. Although he wears the impeccable suit of a serious lawyer, his humanity constantly shines through, sometimes to his detriment. Unable to ignore the distress of others, no matter how trivial, he is often described as «too nice», even by his own mother.
Raised in the Seocho district, he dreams of starting a new legal career there. However, despite his best efforts, he is repeatedly turned down for interviews at law firms, for no apparent reason. His trajectory takes an unexpected turn when he rents an office... unaware that it's room 501 in the Okcheon building, formerly used as a shaman's dwelling.
From that moment on, Shin Yi-rang began to see ghosts whether he wanted to or not. Recently released images show him as both a confident lawyer and an exhausted man, praying in a church to escape the apparitions that invade his daily life.
Neither hero nor chosen, but unable to look away
The visual contrasts between these different facets hint at a deeper story. Possessed in spite of himself, Shin Yi Rang finds himself embroiled in cases that defy all legal logic. Because he can't look away, he gradually becomes involved in the stories of these wandering souls, becoming a lawyer like no other.
The production team explains: «Shin Yi-rang is not a character with special powers, nor is he a hero from the start. It's simply his inability to ignore others that leads his life down a totally different path.»
They also add: «Yoo Yeon-seok has shown a very broad palette in his previous projects. In this series, he brings Shin Yi Rang to life through his first comic performance, as well as through a subtle interplay of multiple roles related to possessions, reflecting different histories and identities. Viewers will discover a Yoo Yeon-seok they've never seen before.»
Alongside Yoo Yeon-seok, Esom plays Han Na-hyun, an elite lawyer who accompanies her in solving cases as unlikely as they are moving... filed by clients who are already dead.
The drama will air from March 13 (no OTT yet).
