Lee Joon-gi back in a sageuk 10 years after Moon Lovers?

Announcements

Ten years on Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Lee Joon-gi could finally make a comeback in a historic K-drama. According to several South Korean media reports on July 23, the actor is in talks to play the lead role in Gyeongbokgung Detective Agency, an action-packed historical comedy set in the heart of the royal palace.

The synopsis

The series will follow a king (played by Lee Joon-gi if he accepts the role) who takes matters into his own hands to solve a mysterious case, supported (or perhaps hindered?) by a young rookie officer tasked with following him on his adventures. The title suggests a mix of suspense, humor and chases across the rooftops of Gyeongbokgung Palace.

The production company has not yet confirmed the shooting date, broadcast channel or full cast. But one thing's for sure: if Lee Joon-gi says yes, it will be an event. Since his debut, the actor has been one of the leading figures of modern sageuk, with outstanding roles in Iljimae, Arang and the Magistrate, Gunman in Joseon and The Scholar Who Walks the Night. Yet he hadn't set foot on the set of a historical drama since 2016.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeoa sageuk starring Lee Joon-gi, IU and Kang Ha-neul that left its mark on kdrama fans.

This new project would also mark his return to the small screen after Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun (2023), in which he played one of the main roles alongside Jang Dong-gun and Shin Sae-kyeong.
