Netflix prepares an explosive return to the 1980s with its new kdrama Aemaa comedy-drama that explores the underbelly of Korean cinema at the time. Scheduled for August 22the drama revealed new character imagesoffering an intriguing glimpse of its colorful heroes.
A story inspired by the birth of a cult film
Aema follows the story of Jung Hee-ran (Lee Ha-nee), a charismatic superstar, and Shin Joo-ae (Bang Hyo-rin), a young up-and-coming actress, as they take part in the production of the film "Madame Aemawhich shook up the Korean box-office in the early 1980s.


Hee Ran, winner of a Best Actress award at an international festival, categorically refuses to play roles deemed too provocative and therefore declined the film's lead role. At the other end of the spectrum, Joo Ae, a total novice in the business, finds herself propelled into the spotlight after being chosen to play the heroine.


Ambitious casting for a film fresco
The new visuals also reveal Goo Joong-ho (Jin Sun-kyu), the ruthless director of the Shinsung Film Company, ready to do anything to ensure the success of the project, and Kwak In-woo (Cho Hyun-chul), a first-time director who sees in Ms Aema the perfect opportunity to make his first film.




With period-accurate costumes, sets and atmosphere, Aema promises to show a behind-the-scenes look at an industry in the throes of change, with its glamour, ambitions, sacrifices and personal struggles.
