Just a few days before its release, " Surely Tomorrow "continues to unfold. The director Im Hyun-wook, already acclaimed for Reflection of You and King the Land, shared his intimate vision of this new romantic drama which explores the emotional trajectory of 2 former lovers, Lee Gyeong-do and Seo Ji-woo, played by Park Seo-joon and Won Ji-an.

A romance that both smiles and hurts

The drama follows a couple who loved each other at 20, found each other again at 28... before splitting up again. Years later, their paths cross in an unexpected situation: Gyeong-do has become a journalist covering an adultery scandal, and Ji-woo is the wife of the man involved.

On discovering the script, Im Hyun-wook explains that he was immediately moved: "As I read, my mouth was smiling but my eyes were watering. It's a rare romance, capable of bringing humor, excitement and a lingering sadness. I immediately thought: these emotions must live on screen." He confides that this drama is not "just another romance", but a natural extension of his entire career, an exploration of that beat of emotion unique to every love story.

The director explains that he wanted to portray their relationship as one continuous emotional thread, rather than three distinct periods. Despite nearly 20 years of bonding, their actual time together "doesn't even reach a year", he explains, but that's enough to bend the fate of both characters.

Seasons, visuals and styles as an emotional language

To distinguish the different eras of their relationship, the team worked on the characters' appearance: Gyeong-do evolves little, reflecting an almost reassuring constancy. Ji-woo, on the other hand, changes her look according to her age, as if each period redefined her identity. "Gyeong-do is the immobile axis, Ji-woo the movement", sums up Im Hyun-wook.

The seasons were also treated as characters in their own right: spring, summer, autumn, winter... each embracing the emotional tone of the moment. Some scenes were even shot out of season, to capture the light, mood or atmosphere corresponding to the protagonists' state of mind.

Im Hyun-wook concludes by confiding his impatience: "Knowing that so many people were waiting for Surely Tomorrow made me want to show it even more. I hope that, even after the last scene, Gyeong-do and Ji-woo's story will stay in your heart for a long time."

Surely Tomorrow will be broadcast from December 6, 10:40pm (KST) on JTBC and worldwide on Prime Video, in France under the name "Un jour, peut-être".
