JTBC unveiled the first teaser of his next drama « We Are All Trying Here »featuring Koo Kyo-hwan in the role of a man lost between frustration, jealousy and the quest for recognition.
The series follows Hwang Dong-man, He's a man surrounded by friends, all of whom seem to have made a success of their lives. Convinced that he's the only one not getting ahead, he finds himself overcome by a mixture of anguish, envy and resentment. Unable to come to terms with the situation, he embarks on a personal journey in search of a sense of closure.
A man consumed by a sense of failure
The teaser opens with a scathing remark from successful director Park Kyung-se, played by Oh Jung-se. He states bluntly: «Hwang Dong-man should leave this industry. There's no reason for him to stay here.»
According to him, Dong-man has only 2 reactions to the success of others: « He goes crazy when others succeed, and is happy when they fail. »These words highlight the profound inferiority complex gnawing at the character.
Dong-man's frustration then erupts on several occasions: he lashes out at his director friend, screams on a bus and bangs his head against the window, letting his anger and despair explode.
A desperate quest to exist
Behind this chaotic attitude, however, lies deep distress. Convinced that nothing is working in his life, Dong-man climbs a hill with tears in his eyes and shouts his own name in a moment of despair.
In one particularly intense scene, he says: «When I can't prove my worth by succeeding, I prove it by collapsing.»
This statement reveals his desperate need to be noticed and to make his mark, even at the cost of his own downfall.
Despite this, Dong-man refuses to stop. At the end of the teaser, he challenges the world with these words: « Try to stop me. Let's see if I'll stop. "
His determined look suggests that, despite all his difficulties, he could still find his way.
The drama «We Are All Trying Here» will be broadcast from April 18 at 10:40pm (KST) on JTBC and available on Netflix.
