As the broadcast of “Perfect Crown”, IU is set to captivate viewers with a character as complex as she is unpredictable. In this highly-anticipated MBC drama, the singer-actress plays Sung Hee-joo, a powerful heiress in a world where social status depends on more than wealth.

The story takes place in an alternate reality where modern Korea is a constitutional monarchy. Sung Hee-joo, from a large family, has everything (wealth, beauty and talent) but is still considered a commoner. Opposite her is Grand Prince Yi An (played by Byeon Woo-seok), who, despite his royal blood, seems to lack everything.

An unpredictable and fascinating character

IU shared her feelings ahead of the drama's release, confiding, «I'm both worried and nervous, but mostly excited that so many people are waiting for it. I hope this project will be enjoyed to the end.»

She explains that she was immediately impressed by the project: «The title is unique, so it left a strong impression on me. Each character has a very distinct personality, and their relationships are particularly interesting.»

What won her over most of all was Sung Hee-joo herself. IU describes her character in three words: «ambition, temperament and cuteness». A blend that reflects a heroine far from classic.

At first, Hee-joo stands out for her boundless ambition and unpredictability. But as the story progresses, she reveals a more endearing side, while retaining a certain strength.

A heroine in search of recognition

Despite her privileges, Sung Hee-joo must constantly fight against the limits imposed by her status and her past. Born out of wedlock into a system dominated by the aristocracy, she finds herself confronted by barriers she cannot ignore.

IU also emphasizes an essential trait of her character: her ability to act. She explains that Hee-joo doesn't hesitate to put aside her pride to achieve her goals, particularly in her relationship with Grand Prince Yi An.

The actress also sought to show all the emotional complexity of the character: «Even though Hee-joo is good at hiding her vulnerability behind cynical attitudes, I didn't want to lose the moments when her loneliness and fragility come through.»

Finally, IU promises a drama rich in emotions and twists: «The beginning is very fast-paced, the emotions between the characters are closely linked, and the second half develops a very emotional love story.»

“Perfect Crown” will be broadcast from April 10 at 9:40pm (Korean time) on MBC.
