Good news for fans of » Extraordinary Attorney Woo " (이상한 변호사 우영우). The highly anticipated season 2 of the phenomenon drama has entered a key phase in its development. According to industry reports, the series has officially launched pre-production, with script writing now underway.
Scriptwriter Moon Ji-won is currently working on the scripts for the new season, while the production company AStory is making progress on the overall preparation of the project. A source close to the matter confirms that production is following its normal course, specifying that «season 2 of Woo Young-woo is well and truly in preparation, and that script writing has begun».
A cult drama with unrivalled records
Broadcast in 2022 on the ENA, the series told the story of Woo Young-woo, a young up-and-coming lawyer on the autism spectrum with an extraordinary genius, played by Park Eun-bin. His career with a major law firm had left a deep impression on the public.
The success was immediate and massive. The last episode reached 17.5 % of audience, an absolute record for a drama broadcast on ENA to date. In the face of this craze, calls for a season 2 never ceased after the end of the broadcast.
A project slowed down but still very much alive
Originally, AStory was aiming for production of season 2 by 2024, and had signed a writing contract with Moon Ji-won as early as 2023. However, script development took longer than expected, leading to a postponement of the schedule, particularly with regard to casting.
In an interview last year, Park Eun-bin indicated that she had not yet been contacted regarding her return to the role of Woo Young-woo. A logical situation given the progress of the project, since filming can only begin once the pre-production phase (script and casting) has been fully finalized.
The question of the return of the original cast, director and creative team therefore remains open, even if the production would like to retain as much of the talent from season 1 as possible.
Another encouraging factor is the international remakes of the drama. AStory is currently working on adaptations for the United States, Japan and Europe, by directly supervising the entire process, from pre-production to broadcast. According to the company, «these global projects could accelerate and strengthen production of season 2».».
No broadcast date has yet been announced, but one thing is certain: Woo Young-woo is officially back on screen.
