After delighting fans this year with Melo MovieChoi Woo-shik could soon be making a comeback in a totally different register. The actor is reportedly in advanced talks to play the lead role in the upcoming K-drama Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid, an adaptation of a successful webtoon by Na Yoon-hee.

This promising project will blend romance and history, against the backdrop of the Korean resistance during the Japanese occupation. The story will follow Kang Ui-hyeonis a young man from a wealthy family who became an independence activist after witnessing the violence inflicted on his compatriots while studying in Japan. Wounded during a dangerous mission, he is rescued on a beach by Su A, a courageous young woman ready to do anything to protect him.
The K-drama promises to be ambitious, led by the director Hur Jin-ho (Love in the Big City) and screenwriter Lee Ha-neol, already known for The Last Princess and Assassination. The art direction is also highly anticipated, with the participation of cinematographer Choi Yoon-man, acclaimed for his work on My Mister.
If Choi Woo-shik is confirmed, this role could mark a new stage in his already busy career. It would be a return to historical drama for the actor, while exploring a romantic and committed dimension.
While we await official confirmation, fans can look forward to Choi Woo-shik's upcoming role in the romantic comedy Would You Marry Me?, in which he will be co-starring with Jung So-min. And next year, he will make his Disney+ debut with The Waking, a thriller by Kim Tae Gon (Project Silence).
