The legal series Beyond the Bar (La voie du droit in France), broadcast on tvN and Netflix, just wrapped up its 12 episodes on September 7. But already, fans are wondering about the future of this drama that blends legal drama and emotional tension between its two protagonists. Interviewed by iMBC Entertainment, the actor Lee Jin-wook confided in us about his experience working alongside Jung ChaeYeonand made no secret of his enthusiasm at the idea of a possible sequel.
Obvious chemistry despite doubts
As the brilliant but icy lawyer Seok Hoon, Lee Jin-wook shared the stage with Jung ChaeYeon, who plays Hyo-min, an idealistic and intrepid young lawyer. Despite their 16-year age gap, the duo captivated audiences with their subtle chemistry.

The actor was keen to emphasize his partner's talent: "I thought that if it didn't work out, it would be a problem. But she has such a great personality and works so hard... how could it go wrong? Before the shoot I wondered if she'd pull it off, but right from the start she surprised me with her acting."
Lee Jin-wook particularly praised Jung ChaeYeon's accuracy in the trial scenes: "The atmosphere can be heavy and the dialogue very long. I wondered how to make it convincing enough for the audience not to change the channel. She played with such strength. You could tell she'd prepared everything, from her voice to her eyes, and she fit the role of the young lawyer perfectly. Even when Hyo Min's sharp character might have seemed cold, her natural charm made it endearing. I was really grateful that she interpreted the role."
A contained romance... to better blossom?
Throughout the season, the relationship between Seok Hoon and Hyo Min remained discreet, suggested rather than explicitly shown. A few moments of tenderness (such as when Hyo Min comforts Seok Hoon after the loss of his dog, or when the latter encourages him in his doubts) nevertheless hinted at a more intimate dimension.
Lee Jin-wook confided that the original writing went further in the sentimental direction: "Originally, the script contained deeper emotions. But we felt that if the romance took up too much space, it would dilute the strength of the story. We adjusted to keep the relationship subtle, just enough to generate excitement, while letting the audience project itself naturally. That's why, I think, audiences stayed hooked."
Season 2 with more romance?
The actor's words leave no doubt: if the series were to return, the relationship between Seok Hoon and Hyo Min would take on greater prominence. "If there's a season 2, I think you'll see a more developed love story. The discussions are positive right now, so I hope fans will look forward to it."
This was enough to raise the hopes of viewers who were seduced by this blend of courtroom drama and subdued romantic tension. It now remains to be seen whether tvN will give the go-ahead for a 2nd season.
